A Study in Vagueness

I think we all got this email. Yes, I mean the email on the right.

We as in the NYU student population.

You may not be apart of this demographic.

So it was rude of me to assume so I apologize if you are not.

The distinction is not crucial for the explanation of the intentional contextual omission of this email.

RE: An Email Threat Against NYU

A bit before 11:00 a.m today, a number of offices at the University received a despicably racist threat of violence via email. Though the email does refer to NYU, there were essentially no specifics about campus locations, and law enforcement has indicated that they believe that email address is one that has been used previously for hoax threats.

We are taking the matter very seriously. We immediately got in touch with the NYPD and the FBI, have shared the threat with them, and have asked for increased presence and assistance in responding to and investigating the threat. Campus Safety Officers have been placed on heightened alert.

While there is no conclusion by any law enforcement agency that the threat is credible, we appreciate the NYPD dispatching more resources to provide an elevated law enforcement presence in the area.

At this point, we are not making any changes to campus operations, but we shall continue to be on a heightened state of alert.

If there is a genuine emergency, if you detect anything that may relate to this threat, or if you have any knowledge of this threat or who sent it, please call the NYPD (call 9-1-1 if it is an emergency) and then call 212-998-2222, Campus Safety’s main desk.

I know this kind of information can be unnerving. Please remember that there are people and resources to assist you: for students, through the Wellness Exchange (212-443-9999) and the Dean of Students office, and for employees through the Employee Assistance Program.
